3:1. | Mosheh was pasturing the flocks of Yithro his father-in-law, priest of Midyan. He had guided the flocks behind the wilderness and was going towards Choreb, the mountain of Elohim. | ûmôsheh hâyâh rô‘eh ’eth-tsô’n yithrôw chôthenôw kôhên midyân wayyinhag ’eth-hatstsô’n ’achar hammidbâr wayyâbô’ ’el-har hâ’elôhîym chôrêbâh |
3:2. | The messenger of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire from the middle of a thorn-bush. He looked - and see! The thorn-bush was alight with fire, and yet it was not being consumed. | wayyêrâ’ male’akh YHVH ’êlâyw belabbath-’êsh mittôwkh haççeneh wayyare’ wehinneh haççeneh bô‘êr bâ’êsh wehaççeneh ’êynennû ’ukkâl |

Mosheh said, “Let me turn aside to see this great sight, how it is that the thorn-bush is not burning up”. |

3:4. | Yahweh saw that he turned aside to look. Elohim called to him from the middle of the thorn-bush, “Mosheh, Mosheh”. “Here I am”, he replied. | wayyare’ YHVH kîy çar lire’ôth wayyiqerâ’ ’êlâyw ’elôhîym mittôwkh haççeneh wayyômer môsheh môsheh wayyômer hinnênîy |

Yahweh said to Mosheh, “Go to the people and make them holy this day and the next. They must wash their clothes. |

19:11. | They must be prepared for the third day, for on the third day Yahweh will come down in the sight of all the people onto Mount Sinai. | wehâyû nekônîym layyôwm hashshelîyshîy kîy bayôwm hashshelîyshîy yêred YHVH le‘êynêy kol-hâ‘âm ‘al-har-çîynay |
19:12. | You will set a boundary restricting the people, and say to them, ‘Keep yourselves from going up into the mountain or touching its fringes, for anyone touching the mountain will certainly be killed’.” | wehigebaletâ ’eth hâ‘âm çâbîyb lê’môr hishshâmerû lâkhem ‘alôwth bâhâr ûnegôa‘ beqâtsêhû kol-hannôgêa‘ bâhâr môwth yûmâth |

On the third day in the morning there was thunder and lightning, a heavy cloud upon the mountain, and the sound of a horn blowing loudly, and all the people in the camp shook. |
wayehîy bayyôwm hashshelîyshîy biheyôth habbôqer wayehîy qôlôth ûberâqîym we‘ânân kâbêd ‘al-hâhâr weqôl shôphâr châzâq me’ôd wayyecherad kol-hâ‘âm ’asher bammachaneh |
19:17. | Mosheh brought the people from the camp to call on Elohim, and they took their stand at the base of the mountain. | wayyôwtsê’ môsheh ’eth-hâ‘âm liqera’th hâ’elôhîym min-hammachaneh wayyithyatstsebû bethachetîyth hâhâr |
19:18. | The whole face of Mount Sinai was smoking where Yahweh descended on it in fire, and the smoke rose up like the smoke of a potter's kiln. 19:19. | The sound of the horn continued growing louder. Mosheh spoke, and Elohim answered in speech. | wayehîy qôwl hashshôphâr hôwlêkh wechâzêq me’ôd môsheh yedabbêr wehâ’elôhîym ya‘anennû beqôwl |
19:20. | Yahweh came down onto Mount Sinai, to the mountain top. Then Yahweh called to Mosheh from the mountain top and Mosheh went up. | wayyêred YHVH ‘al-har çîynay ’el-rôsh hâhâr wayyiqerâh YHVH lemôsheh ’el-rôsh hâhâr wayya‘al môsheh |
19:23. | Mosheh said to Yahweh, “The people are not able to ascend Mount Sinai, for it was you yourself who solemnly charged us ‘Establish a boundary for the mountain and make it holy’.” | wayyômer môsheh ’el-YHVH lô’-yûkhal hâ‘âm la‘alôth ’el-har çînây kîy-’attâh ha‘êdôthâh bânû lê’môr hagebêl ’eth-hâhâr weqôddashetôw |

All the people, seeing the noise and the flashing, and the sound of the horn, and the smoking mountain - seeing this the people were afraid. They wavered, and took their place at a distance. |

The sight of the glory of Yahweh was like a consuming fire on the head of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. |
